Act Like A Local in United States

If you want to blend in well with the Americans, you can simply start by being friendly and putting a smile on your face whenever you are with someone or at least when greeting people. The locals in the country are warm to people and would always be willing to extend help to expats. Although as mentioned, many nationalities have also acquired citizenship in the country, which makes the culture in the USA quite diverse. But don’t think about that too much, blending well could go as easy as knowing what NBA is or who is the current MVP. Make sure to know your teams and you’ll definitely get by well.

Since it was mentioned that Americans are generally friendly, don’t find it weird when local strangers talk to you. Act more like a local and greet back or toss an engaging conversation. Meeting a stranger that suddenly becomes a friend is not an uncommon thing in America.

When dining, you may observe that Americans do love their hamburgers and pizzas, so go ahead and catch up with a friend over those local favorites. Don’t be surprised by the servings in the USA, because there is such a thing as ‘American size’ even when it comes to food. Who knows how much would fit you if you wouldn’t try?

If you want to look like a local, don’t stress too much on layering your clothes like how it is done in Asian and European countries. Keep it simple by wearing a plain shirt and nice shorts. The ‘all-american’ fashion they say are supposedly simple and comfortable while being matched with exciting accessories.

Another way to act like a local is to participate in organized volunteer efforts. There are a lot of volunteering events in the USA that involve walkathons to raise money for cancer patients or tree planting activities in an attempt to restore nature. Americans are active in involving themselves in social and environmental issues, try to bond with your local friends over an event and you’ll definitely be looking like an American.
