Interview Tips in United States

If you are about to attend your first interview, you might as well prepare for several circumstances that may happen on your interview day. Besides your confidence, make sure you bring with you our tips below for a successful and impacting interview with your potential employer.

  • Dress appropriately. Although you may see most Americans wear business casual in offices, this doesn’t apply when you are going for an interview. The impression that you’ll leave your employer will greatly impact how well they will remember you. Make sure you are in business professional attire. Men and women are supposed to wear  dark colored suits over light colored button-up shirts partnered with leather shoes and formal trousers. Do not wear bright colored clothing, heavy make-up, or a strong scent. Make sure you look formal and not too irritating to the sight or smell of your interviewer.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the position you are applying for and the nature of the work inside the company. You will be asked how your skills will be of good use to the nature of your work, and you would want to answer this with knowledge of what you are getting into. Give examples and focus on highlighting how your capabilities match the company's needs.
  • Be concise in answering the questions to you. To be effectively concise, you should also be straight to the point whenever you are answering. Never try to use flowery words in an attempt for you to sound good because it will not work that way. Always state your point, give and example if applicable and respond with a smile.
  • Be positive in your answers. Do not give answers that are leading to a negative tone such as ‘how bad my previous boss is,’ or ‘the hardships you’ve been through to get the interview.’ Focus on positivity for employers like applicants who can bring this kind of vibe to the company.

If you’re the employee the company is looking for, the HR personnel shall reach you out the soonest possible time they are able. Although it is not an offense to follow up on the HR officer, make sure you just politely shoot an email if you think you should be hearing from them already.
