Stay Safe in United States

Crime rate in the United States of America is moderate at 53.58, although it has been noted that there have been an increasing number of crimes in the past 3 years. Although it is generally safe to go on with your usual activities in the morning, you should take extra precautions at night. Police efforts may be seen everywhere in cities however it is best that you take the following safety tips during your stay.

  • Always be careful in following traffic protocols whether you’re  a motorist or a pedestrian. Roughly around 34,000 deaths happen annually in the USA that are related to traffic, and this is almost the same amount as people dying of gun violence. Observe speeding limits when driving and always check if your vehicle is in good condition. Also avoid drunk driving and stay away from foggy unlit roads.
  • Beggars are common in the US. They may be seen everywhere and may get aggressive at times. Avoid streets that may have beggars along the streets and avoid making eye contact with them for it might also trigger them to approach you.
  • Car theft is also a common crime in the US. Do not leave valuables inside your vehicles most especially if you are going to leave your car overnight.
  • Credit card scams are also prevalent in America. Always keep an eye on your card when you are handing it to a cashier. Once front and back photos of your card are taken, it will be very easy to make a fraud transaction out of it. If you are traveling with your credit card, always mind where you have put it. You should also be aware whether stores have already returned your card upon swiping.
  • When riding a cab, ask your hotel reception or your neighbors about the fair price that should be charged on your travel. Taxi ripoffs are very common in the USA and some drivers would take advantage that you are not aware of where you are going since you are a tourist.
  • Be smart in transacting with unauthorized ticket sellers. There is a common scam in the US that is known as “ticket touting” where a random person will sell you an event ticket for a bargain price, only to find out that such an event is inexistent. Always buy tickets from reputable stores and avoid random people offering you things for a lower price.
  • When going to the beach, always take note of red flags that are signs that no one should be swimming there. Always read signages for potential dangers in the beach you are about to go to.
