Overview
The HQ SACT Internship Programme 2026 aims to provide a small number of current or recent students with the opportunity to 'intern' with HQ SACT in Norfolk, Virginia, HQ SACT, Staff Element Europe, Mons, Belgium, SACT Representative in Europe, Brussels, Belgium or at the Joint Analysis Lessons Learned Centre (JALLC) in Monsanto, Lisbon, Portugal. Interns will benefit by gaining understanding of an International Organization, while substantiating their Curriculum Vitae.
All internship placements will be for a six-month period, with start dates to be determined individually as interns cannot start their internship without their NATO Secret security clearance, and the timing for the completion of clearances varies by nation.

Internship Programme Specialty Areas
JALLC Editor/Quality Assurance (2 posts)
The JALLC is the lead agent for NATO Lessons Learned (LL). The intern will support the Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned (JALLC) Editor in the development and review of LL communication related products.
Core duties:
- Support the JALLC Editor in the development of LL communication related products;
- Assist the Editor and the Public Affairs and Protocol (PA&P) in the communication, public affairs and protocol activities of JALLC’s LL events.
Additional duties:
- Serve as a PA&P Assistant in the JALLC;
- Engage in the update of information on JALLC's Social Media platforms, according to the established Communication Campaigns;
- Develop marketing and media campaigns.
EXPECTED DELIVERABLE(S):
- Properly formatted, laid out and well-written communication products for JALLC communication activities.
JALLC Lessons Learned Analysis Division (2 posts)
The Joint Analysis and Lesson Learned Centre (JALLC) is NATO's centre dedicated to support Alliance wide implementation and sustainment of NATO's Lesson Learned (LL) Policy through monitoring and supervising the NATO LL Process within the NATO Command Structure and other NATO bodies. The JALLC is the lead agent for the collection and sharing of lessons, accomplished through active content management of the NATO LL Portal, joint analysis as an integral part of the LL Process and outreach to Allies and Partners. The JALLC supports Warfare Development and Warfighting, improving NATO's ability to operate and adapt, through training, advising and assessment activities enabling the establishment and sustainment of effective LL capabilities across NATO. The intern will serve as an Operational Analyst in the JALLC LL Analysis Division (LLAD) providing scientific operational analysis support to the JALLC projects. The LLAD delivers high quality and timely analysis reports, products, and associated Lessons Identified in accordance with the Bi-SC approved Programme of Work or as tasked through Emergent Joint Analysis Requirements, directly contributing to the development of NATO capabilities, policies, concepts, doctrine, procedures and training. The intern may also be required to provide Lessons Learned support to NATO exercises.
Core duties:
- Provide technical expertise and advice to members of the JALLC LLAD and to the JALLC project teams (PT).
- Develop and implement techniques for undertaking quantitative and qualitative analysis to support the PTs.
- Support PT document research, data collections, data analysis, and reporting.
- Support drafting of JALLC Analysis Project Reports.
Additional duty:
- Support development and staffing of the inputs to other JALLC products as necessary.
EXPECTED DELIVERABLE(S):
- Documented elements of JALLC Analysis Project Reports, with content and format suitable for external publication.
Programme Objectives
- To provide the Organization with access to the latest theoretical and technical knowledge that the intern can apply through practical work assignments, as well as with additional staff resources.
- To provide interns with an opportunity to learn from the HQ SACT or JALLC community and get a better understanding and a more balanced view of the Organization.
- To expand understanding of ACT, JALLC and NATO in Alliance countries.

Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for Internship
2026 Interns will be either current post graduate students or recent post graduates who have obtained their post graduate degree as of 1 January 2025.
- Age: Over 21 at the time of internship (for insurance reasons) and not older than 35 at the time of application;
- Nationality: Nationals of a NATO member country;
- Languages: The two official languages of NATO are English and French, however the work both oral and written in this Headquarters as a whole is conducted mainly in English.
- Insurance and Immigration Requirements: Interns are required to have health insurance coverage, and take care of formalities with the U.S. authorities regarding their stay in the United States.
- Security Clearance: All interns will require a security clearance from their national authorities prior to starting their internship at HQ SACT or JALLC.
JALLC Editor/Quality Assurance
Essential:
- Current of recently graduated Post Graduate student in Public Relations, Marketing, Graphic Design, Journalism or equivalent;
- Demonstrated excellent writing and English language skills. These skills must include the ability to organize documents logically, write clear and concise, grammatically correct, technical English documents;
- Interest in Defence and Security issues;
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Publisher software. Required skills include: definition and use of styles, template creation and use, and document layout, including layout of tables and graphics.
Desirable:
- Post high school course in one or more of the following: Social Media, Marketing, Design, Organization of Events, Photography.
JALLC Lessons Learned Analysis Division
Essential:
- Current of recently graduated Post Graduate student Operations Research, Management Science, Applied Sciences, Applied Economics or a closely related subject involving quantitative methods.
- Understanding of the principles of analysis using quantitative and qualitative methods.
- Ability to present analysis results in both written and spoken English.
- Interest in Defence and Security issues.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable:
- Experience of working with Defence and Security topics, especially with NATO.

Cost/funding for participants
Remuneration
- Interns will be paid a lump sum of approximately $1,350 per month (€900 per month for JALLC interns) and will be reimbursed for travel costs on joining and separation from the Headquarters, subject to the internship regulations in force. The payment is not exempt from taxation.
- Applicants are advised that the cost of living accommodation and transportation rates in the Norfolk area are very high and it is extremely difficult for interns to live on their monthly internship stipend alone.
