Overview

The fellowship is a four-week in-person program focused on foreign journalists who are living in exile in the US.

Details

Alfred Friendly Press Partners is the leader in transforming journalists who are recognized as vital to journalism excellence, press freedom, and informed citizenries.

We advance our vision through our fellows, our lifelong relationships with them and the subsequent trusting relationships to international newsrooms we are able to develop through them, and the network of training resources and expertise we are able to capture and tailor for fellows and international newsrooms.

Early-career professional journalists from developing countries with proficiency in English can apply for a six-month fellowship. Alfred Friendly provides fellows with basic and advanced hands-on instruction at the Missouri School of Journalism and places them in leading U.S. newsrooms.

Participants work as staff reporters in their host newsrooms are required to develop training plans that they implement when they return to their home newsrooms. The all-inclusive fellowship starts in mid-March and ends in early September.

The program builds skills and resiliency in these areas: Security, Legal, Journalism and Entrepreneurship. Beyond the training, our goal is to create community amongst a diverse group of journalists facing many similar obstacles. One topic – the psychosocial aspects of exile – is embedded throughout many of our conversations, beginning the first day.
