Overview

The Association of Caribbean States (ACS) is inviting young persons who are completing final year graduate studies, and who are citizens of the member countries of the ACS to participate in the ACS Internship Programme. Candidates must demonstrate a clear interest in integration and regional cooperation processes, and should wish to acquire knowledge about the work of the ACS, as well as to apply their own skills and knowledge.

Objective of the Programme:

It is designed to provide trainees with information about the activities of the ACS in the areas of trade, sustainable tourism, transport, natural disasters, policy issues, communication, as well as budget and administration, so that they may apply their particular expertise and development research skills in these areas.

Association of Caribbean States (ACS)

The Convention Establishing the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) was signed on 24 July 1994 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, with the aim of promoting consultation, cooperation and concerted action among all the countries of the Caribbean, comprising 25 Member States and three Associate Members. Eight other non-independent Caribbean countries are eligible for associate membership.

Functions: The objectives of the ACS are enshrined in the Convention and are based on the following: the strengthening of the regional co-operation and integration process, with a view to creating an enhanced economic space in the region; preserving the environmental integrity of the Caribbean Sea which is regarded as the common patrimony of the peoples of the region; and promoting the sustainable development of the Greater Caribbean.

Organisation: The main organs of the Association are the Ministerial Council, which is the principal organ for policy-making and direction of the Association, and the Secretariat.

There are five Special Committees on:

  • Trade Development and External Economic Relations
  • Sustainable Tourism
  • Transport
  • Disaster Risk Reduction
  • Budget and Administration

There is also a Council of National Representatives of the Special Fund responsible for overseeing resource mobilisation efforts and project development.

Members: The Member States shall have the right to participate in discussions and to vote at meetings of the Ministerial Council and Special Committees of the Association.

Description of Ideal Candidate

1. The candidate must be in the final year of graduate studies in any of the following areas:

International Relations

  • International Economics, including areas related to Statistics
  • Tourism
  • Transport
  • Natural Disasters
  • Development Studies
  • Business Administration
  • Communications
  • Languages (English, Spanish, French)
  • Information Systems

2. He/she must be proficient in at least two of the official languages of the ACS (English, French and Spanish).

3. He/she must be a citizen of a member country of the ACS.

4. He/she must be knowledgeable about the region of the Greater Caribbean.

Cost/funding for participants

In addition to training in the specialised area or areas based on each trainee’s particular interest, the Secretariat will provide office space and equipment, and will grant a monthly stipend equivalent to US$212.00, payable in Trinidad and Tobago currency, as its contribution to subsistence expenses.
