Overview
The Carter Center, in partnership with Emory University, is guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering. It seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health. For more than 25 years, the Carter Center Internship Program has provided more than 2,600 interns with a rewarding complement to classroom experience. Carter Center interns come from around the world and make vital contributions to the Center's work. In turn, the Center provides a substantive learning experience that serves as a basis for interns to explore their career options and to attain professional skills.

Peace Programs
The Carter Center's peace programs strengthen freedom, democracy, and access to information in nations worldwide, securing for people the political and civil rights that are the foundation of just and peaceful societies.
Health Programs
The Carter Center's health programs fill vacuums in global health, helping to prevent needless suffering and build hope for millions of the world's poorest people.
The Mental Health Program works to promote awareness about mental health issues and reduce stigma and discrimination against those with mental illnesses.
Operations
An essential element of the Carter Center's work is the operational area, which acts as a partner with the staff in the peace and health programs.
All internships are based in Atlanta, Ga. Occasionally, opportunities arise for interns to travel with staff on Center-related trips (e.g., election-monitoring missions, domestic and international conferences, training workshops).

Candidates should be from:
Description of Ideal Candidate
Candidates who have completed at least two years of study, recent graduates (graduated within 24 months of the internship start date), and graduate/professional students are eligible. For example, a qualified candidate within the United States will have a minimum of 60 credit hours earned toward a bachelor's degree at the start of the internship. There is no age limit.
Since The Carter Center is a part of Emory University, we can work with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) regarding possible visa sponsorship if you have completed your undergraduate degree or if the internship is an academic requirement. ISSS will contact you for required documentation.

Cost/funding for participants
Carter Center internships are a paid opportunity. Fall and spring sessions are 15 weeks long with a stipend of $5,100; our summer session is 10 weeks long with a stipend of $3,400. Interns work 20 hours per week.
