Overview
Each year we attract the most promising and talented students to join CeMM and form a diverse group of smart young scientists. CeMM is an incubator for creative, out-of-the box thinkers, and we place special emphasis on the training of PhD students to become visionary and open-minded scholars, willing to cross old, and to seek, new boundaries.
Details
Whether you are a prospective applicant or a first-year undergraduate looking for future opportunities, I hope you will be attracted by our vibrant, interactive and super-collaborative spirit, our aspiration for interdisciplinary excellence and our dedication to our students. Let us surprise you!
The thematic areas at CeMM range from infection, immunity, metabolism, cancer, rare diseases, network medicine, design chemistry, patient-derived organoids and aging research, always keeping a strong focus on medically relevant questions. These areas are built on the pillars of epigenetics and genome integrity, bioinformatics and systems biology, high-throughput genetics, genomics and proteomics, molecular and cell biology, chemical biology, and organic chemical synthesis. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds such as medicine, life sciences, chemistry, mathematics, physics and bioinformatics.
The goal of our PhD programme is to enable and empower students with the ability to successfully design, execute, manage and explain a research project in modern molecular medicine, through a strongly participatory and interactive programme. The programme is conceptualised in three ‘modes’: collect, connect and contribute. These will guide you through scientific excellence in data generation and validation to responsible and professional scientific citizenship.
Program Structure
The CeMM PhD Program is a unique blend of practical training, lectures, and mentoring that builds on the guidelines of the Medical University of Vienna (Doctoral Program UN94). At CeMM, the PhD studies begin with a 3-month Introductory Program to prime the students for their research work, to develop the mindset of a critical and responsible researcher, and to form a peer network.
During the studies, there will be mandatory course work in the first two years, including basic seminars and propedeutics in molecular medicine, cell biology, and ethics, dissertation seminars and regular Journal Clubs. CeMM institute-wide seminars are held weekly, where students have the opportunity to present their work on a regular basis and receive valuable feedback from Faculty. Towards the end of the first year, each PhD student will nominate members for their PhD committee, comprising of two established researchers in the respective field, which will convene annually throughout the studies to provide scientific and career guidance to the student.
