Overview
Every year, the Court of Justice of the European Union offers a limited number of paid traineeships of a maximum duration of five months. Traineeships are generally undertaken in the Research and Documentation Directorate, the Press and Information Service, the Directorate-General for Translation or the Interpretation Directorate (for detailed rules regarding interpreting traineeships, see below).

There are two traineeship periods:
from 1 March to 31 July (applications to be made between 1 July and 15 September of each year)
from 16 September to 15 February for the traineeships in the Members' chambers and 1 October to 28 February for the traineeships in the administrative departments (applications to be made between 1 February and 15 April of each year)
The Institution
Since the establishment of the Court of Justice of the European Union in 1952, its mission has been to ensure that "the law is observed" "in the interpretation and application" of the Treaties.
As part of that mission, the Court of Justice of the European Union:
- reviews the legality of the acts of the institutions of the European Union,
- ensures that the Member States comply with obligations under the Treaties, and
- interprets European Union law at the request of the national courts and tribunals.
The Court thus constitutes the judicial authority of the European Union and, in cooperation with the courts and tribunals of the Member States, it ensures the uniform application and interpretation of EU law. The Court of Justice of the European Union, which has its seat in Luxembourg, consists of two courts: the Court of Justice and the General Court (created in 1988). The Civil Service Tribunal, established in 2004, ceased to operate on 1 September 2016 after its jurisdiction was transferred to the General Court in the context of the reform of the European Union’s judicial structure.
As each Member State has its own language and specific legal system, the Court of Justice of the European Union is a multilingual institution. Its language arrangements have no equivalent in any other court in the world, since each of the official languages of the European Union can be the language of a case. The Court is required to observe the principle of multilingualism in full, because of the need to communicate with the parties in the language of the proceedings and to ensure that its case-law is disseminated throughout the Member States.

Eligibility
- You must be a national of a Member State of the European Union, subject to duly justified exceptions.
- You must have completed a university course in law, political science or economics or in a related field, attested by a diploma (or, exceptionally, an equivalent course of study).
- You must have a thorough knowledge of an official language of the European Union and a good knowledge of another official language of the European Union. For operational reasons, a good knowledge of French is desirable.
- You must not have already undertaken a traineeship (whether paid or unpaid) in an institution or body of the European Union.

Cost/funding for participants
The grant amount is a net € 1 554 every month. This grant is not subject to the tax regime applicable to officials and other agents of the European Union. A contribution of € 150 towards travel costs is paid to trainees whose place of residence is located 200km or more from the Court of Justice of the European Union.
This remuneration does not apply to traineeships carried out in the Members’ chambers, outside of the two fixed periods under a professional training course for which trainees also receive a grant, an allowance or remuneration.
