Erasmus Mundus MSc European Forestry (MScEF)

The MSc European Forestry Programme (MSc EF) attracts many applications from prospective students every year. At UEF the application round opens each year in December for studies starting in the following autumn. Will we be receiving your application this year?

Admission requirements

Degree requirements

All applicants should have a bachelor's degree in forest sciences corresponding to at least three years' of full-time academic studies (equivalent to 180 ECTS credit units in the Finnish university system) obtained at an internationally recognised and accredited university or higher education institution.

Temporary (provisional) degree certificate

A temporary (provisional) degree certificate is a document issued by an institution to a student who has successfully completed all studies included in the degree. The student has graduated. The temporary degree certificate is issued as a replacement for the actual degree certificate e.g. in case the actual degree certificate cannot be given to the student immediately after completion of studies due to technical or administrative reasons. The temporary degree certificate should include the name of the institution awarding the degree, the date of issue, and the name of the person to whom the degree certificate has been issued and which title/degree the person has been awarded. A temporary (provisional) degree certificate is accepted if it was awarded no more than five years earlier. The five-year validity period begins from the date on which the degree was conferred and must not expire prior to the application deadline. In other words, a temporary degree certificate is not accepted if it was awarded more than five years ago. In such cases, the applicant must present his or her final degree certificate.

Statement issued by the university

In case, the applicant has not yet received a BSc Degree certificate by the admission deadline, a statement issued by the applicant's university is also accepted as a replacement of the actual degree certificate. This statement should include the name of the institution which is going to award the degree, the expected date of issue (graduation), and the name of the person to whom the degree certificate will be awarded. The final deadline to submit the actual degree certificate to the MSc EF programme coordinator (Ms Marjoriitta Möttönen) is 31 July 2019.

Language requirements

Applicant must have sufficient English language proficiency. The English language proficiency must be proved by:

• IELTS (Academic): overall 6.5, or
• TOEFL (iBT): 90, or
• PTE: 59.

The English language test is not required from applicants who have conducted

• Bachelor's or master's degree (or higher) in English language, or
• Secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.

Instead of language test scores, it is required that the above-mentioned candidates enclose in the application a certificate from the university stating that the language of instruction during BSc/MSc studies has been English. Those who have completed their secondary education in the above-mentioned countries must enclose a copy of their transcript in the application.

Scholarships

For students applying for the MSc EF programme, there will be Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) scholarships available on a competitive basis.

Please note that if you have already received an EMJMD or an Erasmus Mundus Master Course/Joint Doctorate scholarship, you are not eligible for an additional EMJMD scholarship. You also cannot benefit from another EU-funded scholarship scheme while you are receiving an EMJMD scholarship. Annually, each student candidate can apply for an EMJMD scholarship to a maximum number of three different joint programmes, Erasmus Mundus Master’s Courses and Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Programmes combined.

The comprehensive eligibility criteria

The EMJMD student scholarships will include student participation costs (including the consortium fees and full insurance coverage), a contribution to student travel and installation cost and a subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme. Details on the EMJMD student scholarship amounts are given below:

Contribution to the participation costs

• 8 500 EUR per year per scholarship holder from a Partner Country
• 4 250 EUR per year per scholarship holder from a Programme Country

Contribution to travel and installation costs

• 1 000 EUR per year per scholarship holder resident in a Programme Country for travel costs.
• 2 000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1 000 EUR for installation costs for a scholarship holder, resident in a Partner Country less than 4000 km from the EMJMD coordinating HEI.
• 3 000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1 000 EUR for installation costs for a scholarship holder, resident in a Partner Country 4 000 km or more from the EMJMD coordinating HEI.

Contribution to the subsistence costs

• 1 000 EUR per month for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme (24 months maximum). Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to the scholarship holders for the EMJMD periods (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence, nor to scholarship holders from a Partner Country for the EMJMD periods exceeding one trimester (i.e. 3 months or the equivalent of 15 ECTS credits) spent in any Partner Country.

EMJMD scholarships for students from Partner Countries

The above scholarships (max. 48 000 EUR) can be applied by the students whose citizenship is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries (see above). Partner Country students who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any Programme Country are considered as Partner Country students. The five-year reference period for this 12-month rule is calculated backwards from the submission deadline of applying for an EMJMD scholarship.

Students with Partner Country citizenship who do not fulfil the Partner Country criteria defined above (12-month rule) count as Programme Country students. Students with a double nationality (of a Partner and of a Programme Country) must specify the nationality under which they submit their application.

Individuals who have already benefited from an Erasmus Mundus Master’s Course scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another Erasmus Mundus Master’s Course. Students benefiting from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus Master’s studies.

A maximum of three students with the same nationality per Category can be awarded an EMJMD scholarship.

EMJMD scholarships for students from Programme Countries

The above scholarships (max. 39 500 EUR) can be applied by the students whose citizenship is one of the Erasmus+ Programme Countries (see above).

Students with a Partner country citizenship who do not fulfil the Partner Country criteria defined above (12-month rule) also count as Programme Country students. Students with a dual nationality (of a Partner and of a Programme Country) must specify the nationality under which they submit their application.

Individuals who have already benefited from an Erasmus Mundus Master’s Course scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another Erasmus Mundus Master’s Course. Students benefiting from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus Master’s studies.
