The EMJM programme “Climate Change and Diversity: Sustainable Territorial Development” (CCD-STeDe) is a unique, inclusive, high-quality, innovative, multi-languages Master programme, mutually managed by a consortium of 2 EU and 3 non-EU universities and 3 EU and 1 non-EU professional partners.

Details

The Master concerns alternatives to development, climate justice, social inclusion, environmental protection, international cooperation, circular and solidarity economy, and intercultural relation challenges of territorial development focusing not only on local communities, but also on enterprises, non-state actors, civil society organizations, regional and international organizations. It also aims to offer examples of territories in climate adaptation involving all local organizations promoting just transitions and sustainable development paths. The programme can be attended only on a full-time basis. Attending lectures is compulsory.

Teaching languages are English as first language and a second language among Spanish, Portuguese or French.

From the academic year 2023/24 until the academic year 2026/27 the International Master on Climate Change and Diversity: Sustainable Territorial Development has been awarded as an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree by the European Commission. This unique, inclusive, high-quality, innovative, multi-languages, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master is managed by a consortium of 2 EU and 3 non-EU universities and 3 EU and 1 non-EU professional partners.

Scholarships are granted by the European Commission to the best-ranked applicants.

4 ACADEMIC PATHS | 4 LANGUAGES | 5 COUNTRIES

CCD-STeDe master’s programme is organised in four academic paths.

The four academic paths offer a variety of teachings and specialisations, in order to guarantee a complete, broad academic and unique curriculum. Depending on the interests and chosen language, the four academic paths are so organised:

  • PATH 1: Climate change, sustainability, development / Cambio Climático, Sustentabilidad y Desarrollo (University of Padova and Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar; teaching languages: English and Spanish – maximum 15 students) 
  • PATH 2: Regional and local studies / Estudos Regionais e Locais (University of Padova and Universidade da Madeira; teaching languages: English and Portuguese – maximum 10 students) 
  • PATH 3: Territorial management / Aménagement du Territoire (University of Padova and Université Joseph Ki Zerbo; teaching languages: English and French – maximum 10 students) 
  • PATH 4: Environmental Management (University of Padova and University of Johannesburg; teaching languages: English and French – maximum 10 students) 

In all four academic paths, the first semester is carried out in presence at the University of Padova, while the second one depends on the choice of the academic path:

  • First path: Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (Quito, Ecuador) – blended 
  • Second path: Universidade da Madeira (Portugal) – in presence 
  • Third path: Université Joseph Ki Zerbo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) – in presence 
  • Fourth path: University of Johannesburg (South Africa) – in presence

Description of Ideal Candidate

Admission criteria:

Candidates with education in human and social sciences (economics, geography, sociology, development, management, law, etc.) or hard sciences (agriculture, environmental sciences, engineering, architecture, forestry, etc.) will be accepted to the Master. Candidates are requested to have a first cycle degree of 180 ECTS (Licenciatura, Bachelor degree, Laurea, Licence) or an equivalent degree (diplôme d'école d'ingénieurs, école de commerce etc.).

A basic knowledge of economics will be appreciated.

A good command of English or French (preferably both), spoken and written, is required. Students without a good command in one of the two languages, if accepted will be requested to attend a compulsory language training, outside the curriculum. To avoid any kind of problems, we advise students who don't have a good command of one of the two languages to take language courses before the beginning of STeDe.

Eligibility criteria for scholarships  

  • Students whose citizenship is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries count as Partner Country students.
  • Partner Country students who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any Programme Country are considered as Partner Country students. The five-year reference period for this 12-months rule is calculated backwards as from the submission deadline (defined by the consortia) of applying for an EMJMD student scholarship.
  • Students whose citizenship is one of the Erasmus+ Programme Countries count as Programme Country students. Students with a Partner Country citizenship who do not fulfil the Partner Country criteria defined above (12-months rule) count as Programme Country students.
  • Students with a double nationality must specify the nationality under which they submit their scholarship application
  • Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Programme Countries count as Programme Country students.
  • Please note that, as Turkey, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway entered the Erasmus+ Programme as "Programme Countries", scholarship applicants who are nationals of these countries should be considered as Programme Country students.

Cost/funding for participants

ERASMUS MUNDUS SCHOLARSHIP - BATCH 15 (2025/26)

Thanks to the support of the European programme Erasmus Mundus, every year, approximately 20 Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available, distributed per academic path:

PATH 1: Climate change, sustainability, development / Cambio Climático, Sustentabilidad y Desarrollo (University of Padova and Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar; teaching languages: English and Spanish)

  • 4 Erasmus Mundus scholarships (maximum 15 places available) 

PATH 2: Regional and local studies / Estudos Regionais e Locais (University of Padova and Universidade da Madeira; teaching languages: English and Portuguese) (maximum 10 places available)

  • 7 Erasmus Mundus scholarships
  • 3 Erasmus plus mobility scholarships available only for the second semester> The scholarship will include:
    – subsistence allowance of 250 EUR/month for mobility to Universidade da Madeira (II semester), max 6 months;
    – travel allowance of 195 EUR tot. 

PATH 3: Territorial management / Aménagement du Territoire (University of Padova and Université Joseph Ki Zerbo; teaching languages: English and French)

  • 7 Erasmus Mundus scholarships (maximum 10 places available) 

PATH 4: Environmental Management (University of Padova and University of Johannesburg; teaching languages: English and French)

  • 4 Erasmus Mundus scholarships (maximum 10 places available)

The scholarship confirmation will be sent in May 2024 to the selected students having signed the student agreement.

The Erasmus Mundus scholarships allocation follows these criteria:

  • The resulting selection scores
  • The nationality, for an equal distribution of scholarships to students coming worldwide (see below)

The scholarship holders comply with the following conditions:

  • have — at the date of enrolment — a first higher education degree (or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national legislation and practices in the degree-awarding countries)
  • be enrolled in the EMJM master course
  • not have already benefited from a previous Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) scholarship

Scholarships cover the cost of a student’s tuition fees, travel and living allowance.

The EMJM scholarship covers the entire duration of the Master (24 months), through a monthly allowance of 1400 euros.

Students with scholarships will have covered the tuition fees and insurance for the entire duration of the Master.

The scholarship allows students to cover the costs implicated in the Erasmus Mundus Programme, for
example:

  • Visa
  • Travel costs
  • Installation and subsistence costs (food and accommodation)
  • All other costs

For every year there are around 10 additional places available with partial support and fee waiver, and other places for self-financed students. See details in the different paths’ descriptions.
