Overview

The Space Training Team provides training for all astronauts from ESA and its International Partners (NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, CSA) for the Columbus European research laboratory as well as special skills such as robotics and Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA).

Multimedia production internships are available for students with excellent multimedia/video production skills.

This internship’s projects are varied but focus on producing video and other media for use in astronaut training (both on the International Space Station and the ground), E-Learning and other uses.

What will you do?

You will be involved throughout the production process; helping to write storyboards, shooting the material (for example, you might be interviewing an astronaut or creating an animation), as well as editing final videos. Solid skills in multimedia development, both 2D and 3D, and/or design will see you being kept busy on a range of varied and novel activities. We are looking for creative people who can work independently. You will be encouraged to show initiative, take on new challenges, learn new skills.

Internship start dates are flexible. Candidates should be available for six months. Shorter internships can be negotiated on a case by case basis, with the minimum length being four months.

Description of Ideal Candidate

Desired Skills and Experience

  • You should either be studying multimedia/graphic design or come from any academic background but have excellent multimedia skills
  • Experience with video and/or audio recording and editing
  • Experience creating 2D/3D graphics and animation (eg. Adobe CC)
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills
  • Fluent English (minimum CEFRA C1)
  • A passion for human spaceflight would be beneficial but most important are enthusiasm, curiosity and resourcefulness.

To be eligible for a student internship at ESA:

  • You should preferably be in your final or second-to-last year of a university course at Master's level. You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. 
  • You must be a citizen of one of the following ESA Member States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Nationals from Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia, as Associate Members, or Canada as a Cooperating State, can apply as well as those from Bulgaria, Cyprus and Slovakia as European Cooperating States.

Cost/funding for participants

  • Internships are unpaid, however, a monthly allowance of €800 for non-residents and €500 for residents is granted. A non-resident is defined as someone living more than 50 km from the relevant establishment. The non-resident allowance will also be granted to students with special needs, irrespective of their residency status.
  • Student interns are responsible for their own health insurance, accident insurance and travel expenses.
  • Student interns are responsible for finding their own accommodation.
