CEU-funded scholarships with generous stipends are offered by the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations each year. Over a dozen PhD applicants are eligible for the Full CEU Doctoral Scholarship.

One program, five tracks
The Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations covers several academic sub-fields, but runs one single PhD program, the Doctoral Program in Political Science. The structure of the Doctoral Program in Political Science is based on a system of ‘tracks’ (areas of specialization, or ‘majors’). The tracks represent academic fields / sub-fields or research areas that reflect the major strengths and interests of our faculty.

- Public Policy (PP)
After being admitted to the Doctoral Program, every student becomes the member of one certain track of his or her choice. Each track has its specific course requirement and research topics that distinguishes it from the others.

Description of Ideal Candidate
The Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations asks applicants to fulfill the following requirements / submit the following documents, in addition to CEU's general admission requirements:
Degree requirement
Applicants are expected to hold an internationally recognized Master’s or comparable degree in Political Science, International Relations, Public Policy, or a similar politics- and/or policy related program that provides a relevant academic background for the track to which the candidate applies. A comparable degree in other Social Sciences, Humanities, or other disciplines will also be considered in case of an excellent academic record.
Required documents
In their online application package, applicants to the Doctoral Program in Political Science need to submit the following documents (School-specific requirements are bolded):
- Completed online CEU application form;
- two confidential letters of recommendation (academic);
- relevant undergraduate and graduate transcripts and diplomas;
- a full curriculum vitae or resume, including a list of publications, if any;
- a max. 500-word statement of purpose
- a max.1 500-word research proposal (excl. references, bibliography);
- a max. 500-word summary of a submitted or planned MA thesis or other substantial academic work;
- proof of relevant English language competency.

Cost/funding for participants
The Political Science PhD program offers approximately 18 Full CEU Doctoral Scholarships per year. The scholarships are scattered across tracks: usually Comparative Politics admits three students, Political Economy and Political Theory admits two-two students per year, while International Relations offers six, Public Policy four full packages. Additional packages for students interested in Human Rights and Higher Education can also be available in some years.
What does the Full Doctoral Scholarship cover?
Doctoral students are eligible to receive a full CEU Doctoral Scholarship for up to four years, covering the full cost of tuition, and a monthly stipend to assist with housing and living costs as well as health insurance.
