The Global Innovation Fund invests in social innovations that aim to improve the lives and opportunities of millions of people in the developing world.
Through our grants and risk capital, we support breakthrough solutions to global development challenges from social enterprises, for-profit firms, non-profit organisations, international organisations, researchers, and government agencies.
We are global in breadth and scope: open to the best approaches to solve any major development problem in low- or lower-middle income countries. We seek solutions that can scale up commercially, through the public/philanthropic sector, or through a combination of both in order to achieve widespread adoption.
Our Approach
The Global Innovation Fund finds and funds innovations with the potential to transform the lives of people living on less than $5 a day. We are a non-profit multilateral investment vehicle which places rigorous evidence and impact measurement at the core of our investment decision-making process. We back entrepreneurs and innovators with exciting ideas for change and support them on their pathway to impact at scale.
GIF is nonprofit innovation fund headquartered in London. We are supported by the Department of International Development in the UK, the United States Agency for International Development, the Omidyar Network, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia. To date, these partners have pledged over USD $200 million over the next five years.
GIF is open and accepting applications for funding. We take applications on a rolling basis, with no specific deadline to apply.

GIF supports teams from social enterprises, for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, government agencies, international organisations, and researchers across all relevant sectors and doing work based in any eligible country in the developing world.
GIF welcomes applicants to propose innovative, cost-effective solutions that address any major development challenge in any country (or in multiple countries) in the developing world.
Anyone may apply, including teams from social enterprises, for-profit companies, non-profit organisations, government agencies, international organisations, and researchers in any country.
Your team may involve a coalition of organisations if this is helpful to bring in the skills needed to develop, test and scale your innovation. In such cases, the lead organisation that will be responsible for managing funds from GIF should apply.

Cost/funding for participants
GIF offers:
- Flexible range of financing options. GIF offers grants, loans (including convertible debt), and equity investments ranging from GB £30,000 to £15 million.
- Access to our global network. Our innovators gain access to GIF’s growing network of innovators, experts, and funders around the world.
- Venture and technical assistance. GIF can help to connect innovators with assistance based on their needs.
- Bridge to follow-on funding. GIF helps to connect our innovators to other donors and investors.
