The IIASA Communication and External Relations internships are highly competitive positions that immerse early-career science communicators and those who are starting a professional path in the area of external relations and science diplomacy in the dynamic work of the IIASA Communications and External Relations team. There are four internship positions offered throughout the year: two of these are science communication internships with one taking place from March to the end of May and the second from June to the end of August; one external relations internship taking place from April to the end of June; and a science diplomacy internship taking place from September to the end of November.
Science Communication Internship
Science communication interns will gain experience in communicating complex systems science for a general audience through a variety of platforms including blogs, the IIASA website, social media, and video, among others. The successful candidates will work in the IIASA Communications and External Relations (CER) department, assisting with a variety of tasks including web publishing, media relations, event coverage, multimedia, social media, and other communication activities. One candidate will join the CER team from March to the end of May, while the second intern will join us from June to the end of August.
External Relations Internship
The external relations intern will gain experience in developing engagements between IIASA, its National and Regional Member Organizations and their communities, IIASA alumni, and other stakeholders. The successful candidate will work in the IIASA Communications and External Relations Department, assisting the Alumni and Network Officer, the External Relations Officer, and the Science Diplomacy Officer with a variety of tasks such as supporting engagements and events, including on IIASA Connect, the preparation of Member Organization engagement reports, and the facilitation of activities with external partners.
Science Diplomacy Internship
The science diplomacy intern will gain experience in developing engagements between IIASA, international organizations, the diplomatic corps, policymakers, the science diplomacy network, alumni, and other stakeholders. The successful candidate will work in the IIASA Communications and External Relations Department, assisting the Science Diplomacy Officer, External Relations Officer, and Alumni and Network Officer with a variety of tasks including the organization of conferences, workshops, and other events with a science diplomacy dimension, support engagements with the diplomatic corps, policymakers and other stakeholders, and contribute to IIASA science diplomacy outreach activities.

Eligibility
- A Bachelor's or equivalent degree in science or journalism, and/or current student or graduate of a science journalism program.
- Applicants from all countries are welcome, but IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of countries in which IIASA has a National Member Organization. We encourage applications from developing countries.
Qualifications
- First experience in writing about science for the general public via blogs, newspapers, university web sites, or other outlets.
- Written and oral fluency in English and proven ability to understand complex scientific research.
- Experience with or interest in social media, video, photography, or other multimedia.
