  • Demonstrate deeper methodological knowledge in their main field of study.
  • Demonstrate an ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations, even when limited information is available.
  • Demonstrate an ability to critically, independently and creatively identify and formulate issues and to plan and, using appropriate methods, carry out advanced tasks within specified time limits, so as to contribute to the development of knowledge and to evaluate this work.
  • Demonstrate an ability to clearly present and discuss their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments behind them, in dialogue with different groups, orally and in writing, in national and international contexts.
  • Demonstrate the skill required to participate in research and development work or to work independently in other advanced contexts.
  • Demonstrate an ability to make assessments in their main field of study, taking into account relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects, and demonstrate an awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work.
  • Demonstrate insight into the potential and limitations of science, its role in society and people's responsibility for how it is used.
  • Demonstrate an ability to identify their need of further knowledge and to take responsibility for developing their knowledge.

Mobility Structure

IMFSE is a 2-year full-time Master programme consisting of 120 ECTS credits in total. This breaks down into 4 semesters of 30 ECTS credits each. The mobility structure, with possible change in study location after each semester, gives students the opportunity to gain from the strengths and expertise of 3 universities or more in the field of Fire Safety Engineering.

Semester 1 at Ghent University or The University of Edinburgh covers basic topics in Fire Protection Engineering. All students gather at Lund University to spend semester 2 there, with emphasis on enclosure fire dynamics, risk analysis and human behavior in fire. More in-depth courses are given during semester 3 at Ghent University or The University of Edinburgh. Semester 4 is dedicated to the Master’s thesis, and students can be hosted by 1 of the 3 Full Partner Institutes or 1 of the 3 Associated Partner Institutes. Collaborations with 1 of the Sponsoring Companies is also a possibility.

Description of Ideal Candidate

1/ Academic Requirements

A prerequisite for admission is that applicants have a Bachelor (or Master) degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution (minimum 3 years full-time study or 180 ECTS credits) in civil / structural / mechanical / electrical / chemical / industrial engineering, material sciences, chemistry, physics, applied physics, architecture, urbanism and spatial planning or a related discipline.

Note: Students in their last year of such a study programme at the time of application will also be considered for admission. It is the applicant's responsibility that the required degree is obtained prior to the start of the IMFSE programme.

2/ English Language Requirements

IMFSE is an English taught programme and an English language proficiency is therefore a basic requirement. Applicants must provide an English language certificate which is not older than 2 years at the moment of enrolment in the IMFSE programme (September). 1 of the 6 following certificates must be submitted:

  • IELTS (Academic) Certificate (TRF: test report form) with a minimum score of 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each section).

  • TOEFL-iBT (internet-based) Certificate with a minimum score of 92 (with at least 20 in each section).

  • Pearson PTE (Academic) Certificate with a minimum score of 62 (with at least 56 in each section and at least 61 for writing).

  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) Grade B.

  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Grade C.

  • Trinity ISE II Certificate with distinctions in all four components.

Who can be exempt from submitting such a certificate?

  • Applicants who have recently (within the last 3 years) completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in one of the countries listed on www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/knowledge-of-english

  • Nationals of Canada or any of the countries listed on www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/knowledge-of-english

Exemptions always need to be requested and approved by the IMFSE Selection Committee. It is not possible to be exempt because you have studied a Bachelor degree in English if 1 of the 2 points above does not apply to you.

3/ Degree Legalisation

This can be a very lengthy and time-consuming process, please start it well in advance!

In order to ascertain the authenticity of your diploma and transcript of records, we need to receive duly legalized copies of these documents. Please carefully read the information about the legalization methods per country and how to get your documents correctly legalized on the Ghent University website.

The legalisation method depends on the country where the diploma was issued (check the list of countries per legalisation method on the Ghent University website):

  • Belgian Embassy: Foreign Affairs: legalisation.

  • Apostille: Your country has signed the Hague Treaty, you are therefore required to submit an official copy with original Apostille seal. More information can be found on www.hcch.net.

  • Certified Copy: The country where your diploma was issued has a special agreement with Belgium and you are therefore required to submit a copy taken of the original primary document by a qualified official who guarantees its authenticity as a true copy. More information about certified copies can be found on the Ghent University website.

Note: you might have to contact the institute that issued your diploma to obtain a certified copy or to find out what the procedure is to have your diploma apostilled or legalized.

Note: if your higher education diploma is not issued in English, it needs to be translated by a certified translator and the original plus the translation need to be added to your application.

Note: students with a Chinese degree should be aware of the APS screening. More info on the Ghent University website.
