Overview
Interested in making a difference in the world, but not quite sure how? The Koch Internship Program (KIP) combines an educational approach that puts the student in the driver’s seat with hands-on work experience for future leaders interested in making a difference in the world. We are an educational organization focused on the importance of free societies and how they increase well-being for the overwhelming majority of people.
The Koch Internship Program combines individualized education with hands-on work experience to empower social entrepreneurs to drive their own careers and make a positive contribution right away.
Details
While in the ten-week program, interns benefit from a hybrid education/work experience: they engage in Stand Together Fellowships professional development programming virtually each Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET with their peers and spend the rest of the week gaining valuable professional experience at one of our many partner organizations. Full-time participants receive a $5,500 stipend while part-time participants receive a $3,300 stipend (attending Thursday programming is required for both part-time and full-time participants). The training provided by Stand Together Fellowships focuses on three pillars:
- Learning ST Fellowships’ vision for social change and connecting with our network of collaborators
- Discovering and developing your unique aptitudes and strengths
- Learning the guiding principles of Principle-Based Management™
Each intern is mentored by a seasoned professional and works on a capstone project on what matters most to them.

What is the application process?
- A candidate reviews all the partner organizations’ open roles and applies to those that best match their skill sets and interests. Next, they will receive an email inviting them to answer a series of short-answer questions, providing them the opportunity to not only showcase the issues they are passionate about but also explain the type of non-profit work that best helps them achieve their individual professional development and career goals.
- Every application is reviewed individually by Stand Together Fellowships staff. We then invite successful candidates to schedule a call to discuss which current openings most closely match their skillsets and interests. We’ll use that initial contact to verify the information and preferences shared in the application, help candidates get better connected to the impact of our philanthropic community’s work, and answer any questions.
- Partner organizations will review the candidate’s application materials and invite the candidates of their choice to interview for their roles. Every partner organization may have a slightly different interview process and timeline for making their hiring decision.
- Upon successfully obtaining an offer from a partner, the candidate’s last step is participating in the admissions interview with Stand Together Fellowships staff, which will determine the final admissions decision. Receiving an offer from a partner organization and interviewing successfully with Stand Together Fellowships are both prerequisites to being officially admitted into an educational program.
Please note that as we review applications and conduct interviews on a rolling basis, the candidates who apply earliest have the advantage of more time to search for their ideal role.

Description of Ideal Candidate
What makes a compelling candidate?
There are many things that make an applicant compelling but some of the pieces we most often see from standout applications are: ability to clearly articulate their interest in the educational programs; a demonstrated desire to improve themselves through intellectual development and workplace experience; those that can articulate how they’ve demonstrated growth and been an entrepreneur in their past experiences; and a thirst for seeking and gaining knowledge.
While applicants frequently have undergraduate degrees in economics, political science, communications, history, or business, we encourage applicants from all disciplines, as well as those with advanced degrees.
What if I need a visa?
The Charles Koch Institute does not sponsor visas for candidates for the Koch Internship Program. However, some participating organizations may choose to accept candidates who need a visa on a case-by-case basis. J-1 internship programs are designed to allow foreign college and university students or recent graduates to come to the United States for cultural and educational exchange. These programs must be accredited through the Exchange Due to the application process timeline for the Koch Internship Program, individuals who need a J-1 Visa may not be eligible for the programs.
The J-1 Visa process can be lengthy and the ability to start participating on the first day of the program is a requirement. Please take this information into consideration before applying.
