Overview
Media Arts Cultures is an Erasmus Mundus joint master degree developed by a consortium of four universities. This two-year master’s course with 120 ECTS workload (four semesters) awards a joint degree (Master of Arts in Media Arts Cultures). Collaborating towards a common goal, MediaAC Consortium is built upon long-standing collegial ties within academia and the cultural sector. Danube University Krems, Aalborg University, University of Lodz, City University Hong Kong (<2019), Lasalle College of the Arts (>2019), numerous Associated Partners and the MediaAC Network at large.

Joint excellence enables diverse learning contents and contexts through intellectual exchange within the Higher Education and Associated Partners’ research and teaching strategies.
The European integration process and the enlargement of the EU, that are working to create a borderless economic and political union in Europe active on the world stage, support Joint Masters programs as an opportunity for students to experience multiple intellectual and cultural settings across Europe and European Partner Countries.
Media Arts are a significant cultural development and resource in Europe, allowing students excellent access one of the most influential creative and cultural sector regions on the globe.
MediaAC is is founded in the complementary expertise of the five consortium members and the long-lasting cooperation between their academic staff in specialty areas. The curricular structure is the result of a close-consultation process between all consortium players, including academic, organisational staff and the MediaAC Network. A deeply integrated jointness between the Partners, and their research and practice strengths, ensures the joint delivery of excellent academic content. The combined innovative teaching approaches and learning methods guarantees academic excellence of the students by best preparing them to take leading roles in the academic and non-academic future research, science, and innovation of Media Art. MediaAC is commited to student efficacy, international mobility and networking with stakeholders by fine-tuning details of student guidance and specialization. In an approach of student-centred teaching and learning, a combination of set core modules and educational specialization ensures the excellence of the programme by making it more adaptable and flexible, and thereby stimulating the students to excel academically by supporting their individual career aims and employability.
The MediaAC master program answers the needs of the evolving fields related to the future and heritage of Media Arts Cultures. Our global digital world is filled with new media culture that encompasses the big questions of today such as the processes of globalisation, utopias of neuroscience, political repression, big data, and the growing world-wide surveillance. Thus, the analysis of media arts cultures is socially and culturally enlightening.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
MediaAC validates learning outcomes in an integrated manner to contribute both to the recognition of the skills and competences of the students, but also consistent building up the quality of the course. Knowledge specific to each course and the methods of assessment in the program are detailed in the curriculum.
Knowledge
- Advanced knowledge of the historical, institutional and societal contexts of media art and media culture, and of research practices in this field.
- Advanced knowledge of the technology- and experience-based design contexts of media art and media cultures.
- Knowledge of practice-based methodologies and their application in design contexts.
- Knowledge of key economical, organisational and management issues.
Skills
- Areas of application and research in the field of media art production
- Advanced ability to operationalize research methods and in-depth reflection and the ability to use both in research as well as in professional dissemination practices in the field of media culture and media art.
- Ability to develop innovative strategies and their practical application in research and other activities.
Competencies
- Knowledge necessary to develop a strategy for dissemination and promotion of the cultural sector.
- Advanced competencies related to development and implementation of media art projects.
- Competence in finding solutions to globally important issues in the field of media art and media culture.
MediaAC assesses and validates the learning outcomes in an integrated manner to contribute both to the recognition of the skills and competences of the students, but also the quality of cohesiveness of the course. Students are awarded ECTS credits as common practice for workload and grading, with the equivalent grade from the country where the credits were earned. Students are assessed for learning outcomes theoretical and practical competencies, through the following examinations, as appropriate to the objectives and activities of each module:
- Research-based Written Report
- Written or oral presentation of solutions to assigned challenges
- Logbook / Essay / Journal / Blogging
- Research-based Project / Creative Project / Poster
- Class Participation and Performance
- Group work
- Thesis definition, academic writing and defence.
Moving between the four universities and the international associated partners, high mobility results in excellent learning outcomes through highly advanced theory, progressive practical experience and the best educational methods that are needed for experts in the current and future media art field.
Joint diploma
Upon successful completion of the requirements of the course and a master’s thesis, graduates are awarded a joint masters degree by two or three of the Partner universities. The degree is a 120 ECTS Master of Arts in Media Arts Cultures and fulfils the requirements to enrol in European or international PhD and residency programs.
Each graduate receives:
- Diploma signed by all European Partners,
- Transcripts with each course completed with grade
- Diploma Supplement detailing the programme with specifics exceptional to a joint master degree.

Candidates should be from:

Applicants to the MediaAC programme.
- must complete a first university degree
This should be at least a Bachelor degree issued by a university, quantified as three years of studies corresponding to 180 ECTS (information on ECTS).
Or, if ECTS is not used in the country where first degree was acquired: proof of a successfully completed period of study at higher education level considered comparable with a Bachelor’s degree. The decision on this will be made by the MediaAC Consortium. - show a strong motivation and interest
to learn, work and build the future of the field of Media Arts and their Cultures. - have sufficient knowledge of English for academic purposes

Please also note: An English language test certificate may have expired if it was issued more than 2 years previous. We kindly advise you to check on your certificate. - Other acceptable ways of indicating English language proficiency are:
* Proof of a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree delivered in English from a university in Australia, the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, USA, New Zealand, South Africa or Canada, excluding online degrees, with the applicant having stayed in the respective country when studying for the degree.
*Proof of more than one year of secondary education conducted in English language in either Australia, the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, USA, New Zealand, South Africa or Canada. Applicants may be required to interview in order to check English Proficiency demonstated above.
– Work experience is not an admission requirement. However, work experience can be a strong advantage for an application, especially if it has been acquired working within the Media Arts field.
– Acceptance of your degree must be legally verified for enrolment. Please check to see whether an Apostille or Legal Documentation will be required for your degree. This may be submitted after acceptance into the program.

Erasmus+/Erasmus Mundus scholarships
The European Union granted MediaAC a significant number of scholarships available for incoming students to the Media Arts Cultures Master of Arts program. These scholarships are available to all prospective students, regardless of nationality, and are highly competitive. Only applicants who have submitted all the required documents will be eligible for consideration. The final decision lies with the EU commission on Education and Training based on a ranking submitted by the Media Arts Cultures Admission Board. The following amounts are awarded:
Programme Countries scholarship grantees receive all participation fees paid, 1000 EUR per month stipend for the duration of the 24 month masters program and 1.000 EUR per year per scholarship holder for travel costs.
Partner Countries scholarship grantees receive all participation fees paid, 1000 EUR per month stipend for the duration of the 24 month masters program and between 1000 and 5000 EUR for travel, depending on the distance of the home country to the MediaAC coordinating university.
