HOW MEUS WORKS
As a participant at MEUS you can take up one of the following five roles: Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Minister of the Council, Interpreter, Journalist or Lobbyist. As an MEP and a Minister you will debate and propose amendments on the two legislative proposals of the European Commission and as an Interpreter you will interpret everything that is being said during the sessions. As a Journalist you will play a vital role in disseminating information regarding the sessions and the topics discussed, whereas as a Lobbyist you will try to influence the legislators with your own devised strategy. Taking part in MEUS in any of the five roles will not only help you gain a better understanding of the decision-making process of the European Union, but also make you take up with many different challenges, like public speaking and increase your negotiation skills!
Political groups in the Parliament will be led by elected presidents, who are responsible for coordinating the discussion in the Parliament. Dialogue is also encouraged between the Parliament and the Council, needing to find common ground on the legislative proposals. Effective communication along with strategy are crucial in successfully adopting legislation on a European level. In order to foster cooperation between the institutions, formal trialogue meetings between representatives of the Parliament, of the Council, and Commisioners during which the main goal is to seek a common ground on each provision discussed.
Does all that sound complicated? No need to worry! Participants will be supported by members of the Organising Team throughout the simulation. Moreover, experienced Chairs will lead the discussions and ensure an optimal structure of the formal debates, making sure that all participants have equal opportunities to take the floor and contribute to discussions. Commissioners will enable participants experience all processes associated with the Ordinary Legislative Procedure (OLP). They will present the legislative proposals and conduct the trialogue meetings, so as to ensure that participants fully understand the topics discussed. The Legal Service - consisting of members of the Content Team - will check the legality of the amendments proposed by participants, while Political Advisors will provide support in drafting amendments and in pursuing a coherent strategy.
Although each team has a specific task, all teams work closely together to provide participants with the optimal MEUS experience and create the most realistic European Union decision-making simulation!
