Details
This year’s campaign
Some people didn’t believe you could overcome darkness or harness the elements of nature by the sheer power of your mind or anticipate the future with your thinking alone. Ingrained in each grand dream and idea is a slight pinch of doubt. The Onassis Foundation enters the picture to shatter this doubt by believing in and supporting the vision of thousands of scholars who work systematically towards a better society.
The protagonists of the campaign are scholars who surpassed themselves. Through perseverance and effort, they made the impossible feasible across a marathon of research and studies. Because, after all, every achievement, every discovery, is not a singular ‘eureka!’ moment but a distillation of collective effort through time. Charalampos Antoniades changed the lives of thousands of people by discovering a pioneering heart-attack prediction method. Dimitra Pouli cast her gaze beyond the limits of knowledge to suggest a new skin cancer diagnostic method. Kostas Nikolopoulos shed light in the darkness and discovered, together with his group, the Higgs particle. Themis Sapsis developed an algorithm to predict natural calamities protecting thousands of people and properties from disastrous floods. Anna-Maria Kypraiou animated a more sustainable world through her research on energy saving.
International Scholars
With its primary focus on Greek culture, language, and society, the program for non-Greek researchers promotes Greece as a regional educational center and strengthens partnerships across the academic community.
The Fellowship Program for international scholars was introduced in 1995 and is aimed at academics of all rank―members of national Academies, PhD holders, and post-doctoral researchers―to conduct research in Greece in subjects relating to Greek culture and society. The fellowships are also aimed at citizens of Cyprus who are not Greek residents, while the Greek diaspora, second generation Greeks, and Greeks who permanently reside abroad and have been studying or have been employed in foreign universities for over 10 or 15 years, may also be accepted.
