Details
As a Policy Intern with a focus on EU policy, you’ll be exposed to a wide variety of work as part of a growing business. You’ll have perfect written English as we produce written summaries of policy debates in almost real-time. Attention to detail and being organised are critical. You won’t turn up late to work – we start each day with a team meeting ensuring we are all on top of our brief. This won’t be the first time you have done paid work.
You’ll already have a strong knowledge of the EU legislative process and previous workplace skills and experience are essential. How you learn rather than what you can memorise is most important for life at OPP.
What you’ll do
You’ll be trained how to monitor (and eventually analyse) EU policy on a daily basis to keep our clients informed of legislative developments as they happen. Real-time monitoring requires grit and determination as well as a love of policy. You’ll be keen to read policy documents on a daily basis.
We’ll also train you to write concise summaries of policy debates. However, you will bring with you native-level English written skills.
Your working environment
You’ll be based in a house full of people working in the industry where you’re able to see the European Parliament. When you are not in the office, you’ll be out networking in the Brussels bubble, attending events, and inviting people over for coffee. You’ll need a mature approach to work as you’ll enjoy the concept of self-management and strive to consistently exceed expectations. We’ll all support you every step of the way.

You’ll also take part in our assessment centre (this takes 30 minutes). If successful the next stage is a one hour written simulation of work you’d carry out at OPP. Successful candidates are then invited to interview. Even if you are unsuccessful all candidates will receive a response at the conclusion of the recruitment process. Skills you’ll demonstrate
- Full professional proficiency in English is a must. Both written and speaking.
- You’ll have an understanding of political systems and a passion for policy. You’ll enjoy reading policy documents and tracking the legislative procedure. You’ll strive for consistency at all times.
- We’re looking for policy and client-focussed team players and you’ll need to remain calm under pressure. In practice, this means you enjoy being part of a team that provide excellent customer service and will be excited by the idea of learning fast on your feet and taking on responsibility quickly. You’ll naturally look for solutions rather than problems. You’ll have confidence in your own ability.
- You’ll have an analytical mind and enjoy ‘joining up the dots’ between policy areas. We expect you to demonstrate an understanding of the EU legislative process during the interview process. You should have a passion for policy that goes beyond your studies. You’ll enjoy being part of a small team and be sociable.
- You’ll be able to demonstrate independence through your previous paid work experience. You’ll be confident but you won’t have an ego.
Education
- We expect Masters level education as standard. A European Studies MA is obviously an advantage as you’ll hit the ground running.
