Overview

Founded in 1976, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of minorities in all aviation and aerospace careers.

OBAP is dedicated to supporting minority interests and placement in aerospace careers. To date, OBAP has awarded nearly $7 million in scholarships to more than 500 diverse recipients nationwide. The scholarships, made available through strengthened partnerships with key carriers and aviation-related businesses, allow award recipients to advance or pursue diverse aviation-related careers.

APPLICATIONS INSTRUCTIONS (MUST READ):

  • There is no limit on the number of scholarships that an applicant can apply for as long as the requirements of the scholarship are met. Each scholarship that an applicant applies for must have its own application and all required documentation submitted in one combined PDF file.
  • Attached the ONE COMBINED PDF, to an email. The subject line should be the name of your scholarship and your full name. ie, Subject line: Jeppessen/Malcolm Johnson. The body of the email must include your name, contact information and OBAP member number. You must be an active OBAP member at the time of submission.
  • The application must be typed, no exceptions. There are several free online services in addition to Acrobat Reader to consider for typing on a PDF.

Description of Ideal Candidate

All OBAP scholarships require an active OBAP membership prior to applying. Please refer to the individual scholarship descriptions for all eligibility requirements. 

Applicants must meet the following minimum scholarship requirements to apply:

  • Must be an active OBAP member for at least 3 months prior to submitting an application for any scholarship program.
  • Must be 17 years of age or older (*18 years of age or older for United Aviate Academy scholarship) at time of submitting application.
  • Must have at least 10 hours of verified OBAP volunteer engagement and provide point of contact, volunteer event dates, total number of hours, and details of volunteer activities.
  • Must have at least 20 hours of external volunteer engagement (other organizations outside of OBAP) and provide point of contact, volunteer event dates, total number of hours, and details of volunteer activities.
  • Candidates who are currently enrolled in high school or accredited college/university program may be exempt from internal/external volunteer requirements provided they have or are participating in one of the following OBAP programs: ACE Academy, Explore Aerospace, or Solo Flight Academy.
  • Must reside within the United States and enrolled at an accredited Part 61 or Part 141 flight training institution/organization within the United States.
  • Must provide 2 letters of recommendation with primary recommendation from an active OBAP member and secondary recommendation from a professional acquaintance.
  • Prior scholarship applicants who submit an application and are not selected for a subsequent round (i.e.eligibility, scoring, etc.) more than 3 separate times within a calendar year must provide explanation as to why they were not selected and any feedback provided by Scholarship Programs team for future progression and re-application.
