Overview

Balliol has existed as a community of scholars on its present Broad Street site without interruption since about 1263. By this token it claims to be the oldest college in Oxford, and in the English-speaking world. For students, academic life at Balliol is challenging and stimulating. Balliol admits people of exceptional talent, regardless of their background, and students can study here in almost all disciplines represented in the University. Consequently there is a diversity of people and views in College, which promotes discussion; and all students are encouraged to think knowledgeably and independently.

Details

Sir Colin R Lucas is a historian and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford. He specialises in the history of France, and the donors, who wish to remain anonymous, have created this scholarship in his honour. Sir Colin was Master of Balliol College between 1994 and 2000, and therefore this scholarship is tenable at Balliol College.

One scholarship is available for applicants with Home fee status who are applying to study for a full-time DPhil in History, with a preference for those researching the history of France.

The scholarship is only tenable at Balliol College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. Successful applicants, however, will be transferred to Balliol College in order to take up the scholarship.

Selection is expected to take place by the end of May 2025.

OXFORD UNIVERSITY

As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris.

Oxford has a distinctive collegiate structure. Students and academics benefit from belonging both to the University, a large, internationally-renowned institution, and to a college or hall, a small, interdisciplinary academic community.

The colleges and halls

There are 38 Oxford colleges, which are financially independent and self-governing, but relate to the central University in a kind of federal system. There are also six permanent private halls, which are similar to colleges except that they tend to be smaller, and were founded by particular Christian denominations. The colleges and halls are close academic communities, which bring together students and researchers from different disciplines, cultures and countries. This helps to foster the outstanding research achievement that has made Oxford a leader in so many fields.

The colleges and the University work together to organise teaching and research, and many staff at Oxford will hold both a college and a University post.
