Overview
The purpose of the RFE/RL Internship program is to offer meaningful work experience for university students and recent graduates in order to: support RFE/RL's mission by providing independent journalism experience to young people from our broadcast regions, who will return to their countries to practice good journalism; assist RFE/RL's outreach efforts; provide interns an opportunity to develop their skills through practical experience, thus increasing their prospects for employment.
Details
RFE/RL offers a limited number of placements for interns, which are filled subject to the current needs of our divisions and departments. As such, interns should expect to devote at least three months to their RFE/RL experience, subject to renewal. However, interns seeking full-time, intensive internships for a shorter duration are also considered.
Interns can support the work of the following Divisions/Departments within RFE/RL:
- News Division (Language Services & Current Time TV)
- Media & Public Affairs
- Finance Division
- Operations Division (Human Resources, Technology, etc.)
- Office of the President
How to apply
For consideration, applicants should:
- WRITE a short essay/cover letter explaining their motivation for completing an internship at RFE/RL.
- PROVIDE a resume/CV and writing samples (if applying for a Broadcasting or Media & Public Affairs internship). If applying to a Language Service internship, please provide a writing sample in the language used by that service. Links to digital writing/portfolio samples are allowed.
You can apply directly for one of the already listed internship positions (preferable) or you can submit your application here.
We recommend that applications be submitted at least 8 weeks in advance of the desired beginning of the internship.
About Us
Our Mission, Journalism, and Editorial Independence
RFE/RL journalists report the news in 22 countries where a free press is banned by the government or not fully established. We provide what many people cannot get locally: uncensored news, responsible discussion, and open debate.
RFE/RL is registered with the IRS as a private, nonprofit Sec. 501(c)3 corporation, and is funded by a grant from the U.S. Congress through the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) as a private grantee. RFE/RL's editorial independence is protected by U.S. law.
22 Countries, 26 Languages
We rely on our networks of local reporters to provide accurate news and information in 26 languages and 22 countries. RFE/RL also reaches Russian-speaking audiences in 26 countries (12 beyond the RFE/RL region) and globally via the Current Time digital television network. With over 600 full-time journalists, 750 freelancers, and 20 local bureaus, RFE/RL is one of the most comprehensive news operations in the world.
Regional Expertise
RFE/RL journalists and experts are a unique source of information about many of the world's political hot spots. We also host briefings and special events in Washington, D.C., and Prague.
On The Front Lines
Our journalists are on the front lines in the fight for media freedom in their countries and often put themselves at great risk to do their jobs.
