Overview
The British Scholarship Trust is a registered charity which awards scholarships to post-graduate students from the former Yugoslavia in order to pursue specialist studies for short periods in the United Kingdom. The Trust allocates between 10 and 15 stipends each year. Study periods are normally from three to six months. The stipend normally covers maintenance expenses and in some cases library or 'bench' fees. Bench fees must be agreed in advance. APPLICANTS WHO WISH TO TAKE FULL-TIME TAUGHT COURSES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR OUR GRANTS. The Trust is unable to cover the fees of full-time taught courses.
Details
The deadline for the receipt of completed applications is 1st March.
The main criteria for the final selection of the candidates are:
- Merit (academic achievement);
- Command of English;
- Your ability to complete your proposed research project during your stay in the UK;
- The potential benefit of the visit to your research and your home institution.
Preference is given to candidates who have not previously studied abroad and to candidates who have made contact with the institution they wish to visit in the UK.
The Trust can provide basic advice about obtaining visas where necessary but travel expenses to the UK and to the British place of education will be borne by the students or, if employed, by their own institution.

Scholarship
The grant for the current year is £900 per month for universities outside London and £1000 for institutions in London, where living costs are higher. It is intended to cover living expenses. The grants are modest in size but students can be expected to live reasonably comfortably on the grant. Tuition fees are NOT covered but some other fees charged by the host institution (bench fees, library use, etc.) may be met by the Trust. Travel expenses to and from the placement are covered by the candidates themselves or their home institutions. The monthly grant payments are made by arrangement with the Treasurer of the Trust.
Library Visit grant for students
These grants are for a visit of 4 weeks only. Travel expenses to and from the placement are covered by the candidates themselves or their home institutions. Please note this grant is for a period of 4 weeks only and will not be extended. Within this period post-graduate students should be able to gather a considerable amount of information for their studies. Libraries do not normally charge for visiting students but visitors cannot borrow books.
