The Department
ETH has a long-running and successful history of designing computer systems and developing software tools. Out of this success, the Department of Computer Science was formed in 1981.
Since then, the department has quickly grown and developed into the renowned institution it is today. Currently, more than 30 professors from over 10 countries are active at the Department of Computer Science. More than 220 PhD students and research assistants and over 60 postdocs and senior scientists contribute to maintaining the high standards in research and teaching for which the department is known worldwide. More than 1400 students (almost 1000 in the Bachelor program and over 400 in the Master program) benefit from this directly, leading many to go on to innovative careers in research, education and industry.
In research and education, the department covers a broad spectrum of themes with focuses on:
- Data Management and Machine Learning
- Information and System Security
- Networked Systems and Parallel Computing
- Pervasive Computing and Cyberphysical Systems
- Programming Languages and Software Engineering
- Theory and Algorithms
- Visual Computing
While maintaining its longstanding, traditional ties to electrical engineering and mathematics, the department has increasingly collaborated with other disciplines including physics, mechanical engineering, and the life sciences. The true importance of computer science is best appreciated through such collaborations.
Strong links between the department and a wide range of industries and businesses help foster a mutually beneficial atmosphere of academic rigor and practical relevance. In particular, the department maintains long-term research collaborations with global high-tech players such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, SAP, and Disney.

- You are enrolled in a study program (bachelor or master) in computer science or a closely related field (e.g., electrical engineering, mathematics, physics)
- Your expected graduation date in your current study program (bachelor or master) is in the year after the fellowship will have ended or later.
- You have 2 years of study completed by start of the program (master students naturally satisfy this condition).
- The duration of the fellowship is fixed to the full two months of July and August. You can be present during the entire time.
Language requirements: The program is fully conducted in English. Formal evidence is not required. However, the fellowship requires a good working knowledge of English. Your language ability may be assessed during an interview.
