Overview

The International Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Engineering (IMETE) is a Joint Master Degree Programme, taught in English, bringing together students and scholars from all over the world.

In IMETE, you will become part of a new generation of environmental scientists. As a graduate, you will be able to design and apply state-of-the-art environmental technology and engineering solutions to tackle today’s global environmental problems.

You will study at three leading European universities in 3 different European countries: Ghent University (Belgium), IHE Delft Institute for Water Education (The Netherlands), and the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (Czech Republic).

Details

  • SEMESTER 1 - UCT PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: The University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (UCT) is a public university known for both the depth and broadness of its educational and research activities in almost all branches of chemistry, biochemistry, refining, water-treatment, power and biological sciences and technologies.
  • SEMESTER 2IHE DELFT,THE NETHERLANDS: IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world. Since 1957 the Institute has provided graduate education to more than 15,000 water professionals from over 162 countries, the vast majority from the developing world.
  • SEMESTER 3GHENT UNIVERSITY, BELGIUM: Ghent University distinguishes itself as a socially committed and pluralistic institution in a broad international perspective. It offers high-quality, research-based education in all academic disciplines, and attracts over 32,000 students, including a large international student population.
  • This is followed by the thesis research at one of the three above institutions in SEMESTER 4. IMETE also allows you to visit any of the numerous associated partners from all over the world for thesis research. These partners also contribute to the programme through visiting scholars and researchers.

Once graduated, you obtain a joint degree from the 3 universities and are an "International Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Engineering".

As a graduate of IMETE you are ready for a professional career in:

  • the private sector (environmental technological applications in different domains),

  • the research sector (applied research at universities or research institutions, or in-company research), or

  • the public sector (consulting in local, regional and (inter)national administrations, defining and implementing environmental policy for sustainable development).

PROGRAMME

The IMETE programme takes two years to complete and starts yearly in September at UCT in Prague. In February of the next year students move to Delft, the Netherlands, where they can choose between two tracks, "Ecotechnologies and Resource Recovery" and " Desalination and Water Reuse". An optional company-internship can be completed in Summer. In September students move to Gent, Belgium to choose between " Environmental Engineering" and "Resource Recovery Engineering" tracks in the 3rd semester. Finally, in February of the 3rd year, students start their thesis research at one of the three academic institutions or at an associated partner.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The International Master in Environmental Technology and Engineering (IMETE) has the following admission requirements:

A. Proof that the applicant has successfully accomplished a first degree of higher education equivalent to a B.Sc. degree (equivalent to 180 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)) with a good final mark as shown by a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least B/B+ (US System) or a classification of at least 2nd upper (UK system), in one of the following subjects: pure or applied sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, civil or agricultural engineering, environmental or agricultural sciences, etc.). Sufficient academic knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry is an absolute requirement and basic knowledge of biology is recommended.

Note A.1 Applications may already be submitted before the first degree of higher education (usually B.Sc.) has been successfully finished, if at least 120 ECTS of the programme have been successfully completed. If the applicant meets all of the other admission requirements, admission can be granted on the condition that the first degree of higher education must be successfully finished no later than August 15 of the year the program starts.

EMJMD Scholarhips

80 Erasmus Mundus JMD scholarships are available on a competitive basis. The scholarships will be available for 4 intakes over a period of four years. The first intake will start in September 2023. 75 scholarships will be available for partner countries and 5 scholarships will be available for programme countries.

The scholarships include the following:

  • the students' participation costs (including the tuition, library and laboratory costs, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to the students' participation in the Master);

  • a contribution to student travel and installation costs;

  • a monthly subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme.

The contribution to student travel and installation costs (see below) and the monthly subsistence allowance (see below) depend on the place of residence of a scholarship holder. In order to decide if you are eligible for a partner or programme country scholarship, you need to submit a residence certificate.

Contribution to the travel and installation costs

  • 1000 EUR per year per scholarship holder resident of a programme country for travel costs

  • 2000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1000 EUR for installation costs for scholarship holder resident of a partner country whose location is situated at less than 4.000 km from IHE Delft, The Netherlands

  • 3000 EUR per year for travel costs + 1000 EUR for installation costs for scholarship holder resident of a partner country whose location is situated at 4.000 km  or more from IHE Delft, The Netherlands

Note: In order to verify the candidate’s place of residence, the candidate should submit a residence certificate with the application for admission. For example:

  • a residence certificate issued in accordance with the candidate's municipality normal registration rules;

  • a certificate from the candidate's place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question.

Both documents must have been issued within 12 months before the submission deadline of applying for an EMJMD student scholarship.

The contribution to the travel and installation costs takes into account ONLY the residence of the scholarship holder (regardless of the category under which the student has been enrolled). A unit cost per academic year and a distance band of 4.000 km applies to any student resident in a Partner Country (including students with a Programme Country nationality). Students resident of a Programme Country (including students with a Partner Country nationality) are covered by a fixed unit cost of 1 000 EUR per academic year. The following distance calculator will be used to calculate the correct distance from the scholarship holders’ city of residence to IHE Delft in The Netherlands: http://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/tools/distance_en.htm.

A contribution to installation costs is offered only to students resident in a Partner Country (1 000 EUR per intake). It is an incentive to help covering the additional costs related to the issuing of visas, residence permits, etc. as well as the temporary accommodation needs upon arrival in the first Programme Country hosting HEI and the subsequent mobility trajectories.

Contribution to subsistence costs

Contribution to subsistence costs 1 000 EUR per month for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme (up to 24 months maximum).

Note: Contribution to subsistence costs are:

  • neither given to scholarship holders for the EMJMD periods (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence;

  • nor to scholarship holders from a Partner Country for the EMJMD periods exceeding three months (indicatively the equivalent of 15 ECTS credits) spent in any Partner Country.

Important note: Only students who have not received previous Erasmus MSc or PhD mobility grants may apply for a scholarship
