Details
Working in the Saari Residence
Spring, autumn and winter are reserved for individual artists working in four two-month periods while the summer, from May to August, is reserved for intensive group work. During the spring and autumn, there are usually 8 residency guests at a time at four different periods, and during the summer all premises are reserved for groups. During the individual residencies, the Saari Residence’s Invited Artist is also in residence from September until the end of April. Residency includes an apartment, a workspace and a monthly grant. Groups can apply for grant to cover living and travel expenses during their residency.
The Saari Residence offers the opportunity for peace and tranquillity, and the possibility to focus on the creative work undisturbed. Saari Well is also an opportunity for artists and researchers working at the Residence to meet, share, and leave their mark on each other’s thoughts, work and the Saari Residence. Residents can also participate on the projects of the Saari Residence’s Community Artist. The Community Artist works in the residence all year round.
Researchers working under a Kone Foundation grant have the possibility of staying at the residence: in the winter, one apartment and workspace is reserved for a researcher, and research projects supported by the foundation may come and work in the main building of the Saari Residence for short, intensive periods

Cost/funding for participants
An individual residency spanning two months includes accommodation, a workroom and a monthly grant, the sum of which is determined by the applicant’s experience (€2,500 / €3,000 / €3,600 per month). The purpose of the grant is to cover the cost of living, travel and other expenses. Groups can apply for a grant for a work period of two to four weeks. It is possible to apply for support for ecological travel if you are coming to the Saari Residence from outside of Finland and travelling out of Finland when leaving.
The two-month work periods for individual residencies take place as follows:
- Period 1: January to February
- Period 2: March to April
- Period 3: September to October
- Period 4: November to December
You can apply for group residency for 2–4 weeks between June and mid-August. The minimum group size is three people, and the maximum is 18 people.
Please note: a one-week residency period is granted only in special cases; for example, it would be suitable for a translator workshop or for other groups that need to assemble for a small-scale seminar or workshop (work will take place in the meeting space). To reduce environmental impact, we recommend a more extended group residency period (i.e., 4 weeks) for groups travelling from afar.
As part of the Saari Residence’s aim for social sustainability, accessibility and diversity, artists arriving from Global South can apply for support for their flights and the fees for visas (processing and possible travel). The Global South usually refers to people living in poverty in countries whose history is shaded by colonialism.
The Saari Residence is not intended, for example, for networking within the field of art or for hosting exhibitions or performances. No exhibition or performance is required at the end of a residency period.
Internships, scholarships, student conferences and competitions.
