About the Award
The modern world offers unparalleled tools for connection, from social media to the wealth of information accessible from across the globe. Yet, while these advancements have made us more virtually connected than ever, they have also in many ways deepened the divides between us. The spread of misinformation, negative impacts on mental wellbeing, and the transient nature of modern life have all contributed to a growing sense of disconnection and division. It comes as no surprise, then, that recent studies show a decline in people’s perception of the world as a welcoming and convivial place (1).
This growing sense of isolation has far-reaching consequences. The recent WHO Commission on Social Connection has estimated that 1 in 4 older adults are facing social isolation and up to 15% of adolescents worldwide are experiencing loneliness worldwide (2). If we are to work towards a healthier and inclusive future for all, it is therefore crucial that we do not forget - or diminish the importance of - the power of being together.
At Pernod Ricard, we are committed to inspiring authentic moments of sharing. We believe that the young people of today possess a unique ability to bring communities together and create inclusive spaces where everyone feels they belong. With a growing global awareness of the importance of mental health, inclusion, and the value of authentic connections, we wish to acknowledge and support those who are leading the way towards a more compassionate world and empowering individuals to reach their full potential collectively.
This is why, to mark Pernod Ricard’s 50th anniversary, we are delighted to partner with One Young World to provide The WE Award, recognising five exemplary young leaders who are putting in the work to bring people back together. By spotlighting their efforts, we hope to inspire others and reaffirm our shared commitment to building a more authentically connected future.
To be considered for the Award, candidates must be:
- Advocating for and implementing solutions that promote social connection, and combat loneliness;
- Developing and enhancing social infrastructure (e.g. community spaces, services and networks) in order to encourage social interaction and accessibility;
- Actively cultivating positive social environments (e.g. via responsible drinking initiatives),
- Or, leading preventive and intervention programs designed to support mental wellbeing within communities.
What is One Young World?
One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. We are a UK-based charity that gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.
We stage an annual Summit where the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders, acting as the One Young World Counsellors.
Delegates participate in four transformative days of speeches, panels, networking and workshops. All delegates have the opportunity to apply to give keynote speeches, sharing a platform with world leaders with the world’s media in attendance. As well as listening to keynote speakers, delegates have the opportunity to challenge world leaders, interact and be mentored by influencers. Delegates make lasting connections throughout the Summit, celebrating their participation at social events and the unforgettable Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
After each Summit, the delegates, who are then known as One Young World Ambassadors, work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the One Young World network to those initiatives already in existence. Of those in employment, many returns to their companies and set about creating change from within, energising their corporate environment.
