The internship is located in the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG).

Details

The JIU is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system, mandated to conduct system-side evaluations, inspections and investigations. Its role is to enhance management and administrative efficiency and promote greater coordination among UN agencies, as well as with other internal and external oversight bodies. In its reviews, the Unit identifies best practices, proposes benchmarks, and facilitates information-sharing across its participating organizations that have adopted its Statute, which are currently 28 organizations of the UN System. Review teams are composed by Inspector(s), Evaluation and Inspection Officer(s), and a Research Assistant. The purpose of the interns at the JIU is to assist the review teams and fulfill ad hoc demands of the Unit.

The internship provides an opportunity for interns to gain hands-on experience in the field of oversight and evaluation at the UN. Under the guidance of the review team and the designated supervisor(s), interns are responsible for the following duties:

  • Assisting in the preparation of work plans;
  • Contributing to the in-depth desk research and data collection;
  • Assisting in the preparation of questionnaires and surveys;
  • Contributing to quantitative and qualitative analysis of relevant documents and data;
  • Preparing tables, diagrams and charts;
  • Providing support to the preparation of interview guides and organization of missions;
  • Participating in meetings and interviews as a note-taker and preparing draft minutes and notes;
  • Providing support to the of preparation of documents and slide decks;
  • Assisting in the organization and logistics of meetings, conferences, presentations and virtual calls;
  • Assisting in the preparation of the JIU Annual Programme of Work;
  • Performing other related duties and assignments as and when required, including training, JIU team meetings, support to JIU initiatives, participating in relevant UN initiatives, etc. Outputs and specific work assignments will be discussed and agreed with every candidate during the interview. Additional ad hoc responsibilities can be assigned by the JIU Executive Secretary.

Cost/funding for participants

The internship is for a duration of up to six (6) months depending on the needs of the service. The internship is UNPAID, in-person and/or remote, full-time, and working five days a week (40 hours).
