Details
Who awards the Volvo Environment Prize?
The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded by an Independent Foundation hosted at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, an international research institute for global sustainability in Stockholm, Sweden. The selection process involves a call for nominations, a screening process by a Scientific Committee, and then an international Prize Jury chooses the successful candidate.
The Volvo Group, a leading manufacturer of vehicles and heavy-duty machines, finances the Foundation’s work. The Group is committed to sustainable processes in its entire value chain. Environmental concern and sustainability have been part of Volvo Group’s core values since the 1980s, and it collaborates with partners to constantly raise awareness through research and innovation.
The foundation
The Volvo Environment Prize is presented by an independent foundation with the purpose of rewarding outstanding scientific discoveries or innovations which in broad terms fall within the environmental field.
The laureates represent a wide span of knowledge and areas of importance for the environment. Previous laureates include economists, biologists, urban development experts, resource and hazard specialists, poverty adversaries and others who are exploring the path to a sustainable world. More than 40 scientists have received the award since 1990. Two of the laureates later won the Nobel Prize.
Ceremony
The annual Prize ceremony takes place in Stockholm in November. At the ceremony several hundred guests from academia, business, the public sector and politics are invited. The research and scientific achievements of the laureate (or laureates) are presented for the ceremony participants. The jury citation is read and the formal ceremony conducted. This is also an occasion for celebration, with a gala dinner and musical entertainment continuing into the night.
