Overview
The Schwab and Westheimer Trust was established to assist young refugees and asylum seekers in accessing education, especially where there are no adequate alternative. Ilse Westheimer was a very successful social worker, and trainer of social workers.
Details
Up to three people a year will be supported with a Westheimer Scholarship to study for a first degree or professional qualification in the fields of health and social care.

NHS courses will not usually be funded, unless in exceptional circumstances. These include;
- Doctor or dentist, Chiropodist (including podiatrist). Dietician, Occupational therapist, Orthoptist, Physiotherapist, Prosthetist and orthotist, Radiographer, Speech and language therapist, Dental hygienist or dental therapist, Nurse, Midwife, Operating department practitioner.
The aims of the trusts
- To promote and encourage the education of young asylum seekers and refugees
- To make the wider community aware of the considerable effort and achievement of young asylum seekers and refugees
- To encourage a positive public perception of these young people.
The principle methods by which we hope to accomplish these aims:
i. By providing financial assistance towards education;
ii. By promoting positively their achievements through the provision of awards.

Candidates should be from:
Description of Ideal Candidate
Pease make sure you meet the following criteria before applying:
- Be 30 years old or younger.
- Be an asylum seeker (or the dependent of an asylum seeker) who is awaiting a decision or appealing a decision for asylum from the UK Home Office; OR a person(or dependent of a person) who claimed asylum in the UK and has been grantedLimited Leave to Remain or some other form of temporary status such as CalaisLeave, Discretionary Leave to Remain, Section 67 leave, UASC leave.
- A student wishing to pursue an undergraduate degree in social work, medicine, nursing, or related health or social care professions.

Cost/funding for participants
- The scholarship will pay home tuition fees, and living costs.
- The specific amount awarded will be dependent on the candidate’s individual circumstances, university location, and the completion of a detailed budgeting session prior to enrolment.
