Training the new generation of manufacturing experts
meta4.0 innovatively combines theoretical and applied courses with labs and internships in a multidisciplinary environment.
The programme has been precisely structured to cover during the first year the fundamentals on manufacturing technologies in France and then materials science and engineering in Italy in order to fit the graduates with strong mandatory basis. You will be proposed 4 specializations during the second year and will be able to study in Norway, Slovenia, France or Germany.
Graduated from meta4.0, you will become a highly qualified engineering or scientific staff, in a public or a private sector, trained on key topics such as digitalization, sustainability or advanced manufacturing. meta4.0 will make you benefit form a genuine European learning space and an international network.
The most prominent universities in Europe in the field of Manufacturing
Among the five largest EU Member States, Germany manufacturing sector contributed to one third of the EU’s value added in 2018, followed by Italy and France who also recorded a large share. This confirms that we have to be the main actors to lead the change of the Manufacturing 4.0!
meta4.0 thus aims of boosting the academic and industrial cooperation with six of the most prominent universities in Europe in the field of Manufacturing.
Programme details
The programme is structured around a series of mobility periods over the two years and across 5 European sites (France, Germany, Norway, Italy, Slovenia) ensuring at least 2 mobilities according to the scheme presented below:
- Year 1: During Year 1, all meta4.0 students will be first welcomed in France, in Saint-Etienne, in the end of August and will participate to the integration events, including the introduction of all the partners and flow of their study, seminars given by invited speakers, intensive French course, team building activities and field-trip (visit of some key companies of the region).
- Year 2: During Year 2, the students will get specialized in one of the key Manufacturing 4.0 topics and conduct their Master thesis. Semester 3 will start from the end of August. The cohort will be distributed equally between the four specializations, with a minimum of 5 students in each degree awarding universities. At the beginning of semester 2, presentations of the specialization tracks will be given to inform the students about the different possibilities and content. Students will have to express their interest for three of them by Mid of March. The final allocation will be based on their interest but also on their academic performance and 1er Semester ranking (only scientific field scores).

The Ecole Centrale de Lyon and especially its internal school in Saint-Etienne – ENISE (FR), in collaboration with the University of Ljubljana – ULJ (Slovenia), the Polytechnic University of Turin – PoliTO (Italy), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology – NTNU (Norway) as well as the Technical University of Chemnitz – TUC (Germany) and Mines Saint-Etienne – EMSE (FR), have thus drawn on their previous academic relationships to define the globally unique MSc in Manufacturing 4.0 by intElligent and susTAinable technologies – meta 4.0.

Background
Eligible applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree, equivalent to 180 ECTS, with an average grade of ‘B’ or higher on the ECTS grading scale, and have completed at least three years of study in one of the following fields:
- Mechanics
- Mechanical Engineering
- Materials Science & Engineering
- Or potentially Mechatronics
The applicants will be asked to provide, in the application forms, a documentation proving their participation in a minimum of 135 face-to-face hours of teaching in mathematics or related subjects such as statistics or probability, applied mathematics, optimization, numerical analysis, differential equations, numerical methods, or scientific computing techniques.
These prerequisites must be fulfilled at the time of administrative enrolment. Applications from Students in the last year of Bachelor or equivalent study programmes will be accepted conditionally: Graduation must be confirmed before 31 July of the corresponding call.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships
Throughout the 4 cohorts of the meta4.0 programme, a total of 90 scholarships will be available as follows:
- 60 scholarships will be available for Programme and Partner Countries
- 3 scholarships will be available for IPA Partner countries
- 27 scholarships will be available for NDICI Partner countries
The Erasmus Mundus scholarship includes
- Scholarship lump sum of 1.400 €/month for 24 months for subsistence, student travel, and accommodation costs for the entire programme;
- Coverage of all participation costs for the 4 semesters: tuition fees, library and laboratory costs, and any other mandatory costs related to the student’s participation in the Master study programme;
- Insurance package, i.e., health insurance, according to the EACEA regulations.
Students whose country of residence is one of the Erasmus+ Partner countries will not receive the Erasmus Mundus scholarship for periods spent in this country. The country of residence is defined at enrolment stage («stable residence in the months before enrolment»).
